Restoration Guides
Overview

I’ve always been drawn to documenting processes—whether it was building Windows XP machines in high school, designing technical specs at Oldcastle, or capturing workflows for teams at every job I’ve held. That passion for teaching and preserving knowledge eventually evolved into one of my most creative and impactful projects: a series of illustrated repair and restoration guides for vintage video game kiosks and retail displays.

These guides transform what was once a scattered niche community into one with shared documentation, setting new standards where none existed before.

Creative Concept & Execution

From the very beginning, this was about more than just restoring point of sale kiosks, it was about building an entire ecosystem of knowledge where none existed. I took on the role of researcher, archivist, designer, and writer all at once. Each guide began with hands-on restoration work: photographing parts, measuring components, and reverse-engineering undocumented hardware. From there, I designed every page of each guide with a consistent visual identity. Balancing typography, graphics, and step-by-step photos to create something that felt less like a hobby project and more like a professionally published manual. I wrote with clarity and precision, keeping in mind both the seasoned collector and the newcomer who had just acquired their first display piece. Beyond the design and technical writing, I also curated the first comprehensive record of POS merchandise in this niche, establishing a foundation for future collectors. Every release represented a full creative cycle, from concept to final print-ready document, and each guide reinforced my reputation as both a preservationist and a creative storyteller.

Reception

The response to these guides has been overwhelmingly positive, both from individual collectors and the larger gaming community. What began as a handful of illustrated manuals quickly grew into a trusted preservation resource, with collectors across the globe referencing my work to restore their displays. Several enthusiasts have gone so far as to professionally print and bind the guides, even filing them alongside original manufacturer documentation, a level of validation I hadn’t anticipated but deeply value. In online forums, my pages are often quoted and shared by people I’ve never met, and I’ve become recognized as the go-to authority in a space that previously had no documentation at all. To date, my guides have helped restore dozens of kiosks that might otherwise have remained incomplete or forgotten, and they continue to spark excitement every time a new volume is released.
