Internal API System
Project Synopsis

As OBE’s internal web tools scaled across dozens of manufacturing plants, our reliance on direct database access to iSeries systems began causing performance issues and architectural limitations. In response, I spearheaded the development of an internal API framework designed to securely bridge legacy infrastructure with modern applications, paving the way for cloud migration and scalable tool integration.

My Role and Responsibilities

I led the design and implementation of a suite of internal PHP-based APIs to replace direct iSeries database connections. Each endpoint was built with encryption and authentication, enabling secure cross-network communication—even with tools operating in the DMZ or external to the core network.

This architecture not only resolved immediate compatibility issues (e.g., enabling Experian integration during the Unified Customer Project) but also future-proofed our environment by allowing other teams to build against stable, abstracted interfaces. The API structure dramatically reduced iSeries load and became a foundational piece of our system design—even as we began transitioning tools into the cloud.

Skills Demonstrated

• Legacy System Optimization
Reduced stress on iSeries systems by abstracting data access through purpose-built API layers.

• Secure API Architecture
Built encrypted, role-based authenticated API endpoints to safely expose internal data across network zones.

• Cross-System Integration
Enabled compatibility between legacy systems and modern platforms like Experian, solving critical project bottlenecks.

• Strategic Infrastructure Planning
Established a reusable framework that supported both legacy applications and emerging cloud initiatives.

• Scalability & Maintainability
Designed APIs to be modular and extensible, allowing new tools and platforms to integrate with minimal friction.

• DMZ & Network Security Awareness
Successfully enabled tools outside the core network to securely communicate with internal assets without compromising system integrity.
