One of the more unexpected aspects of working at a local news station was occasionally being asked to participate in on-air segments and promotional spots. While I often worked behind the scenes—consulting with videographers and creatives on editing and production—it was a surprise the first time someone asked, “Want to be in one?”
In this particular segment, my role was simple: a passerby who stops to shake hands with the lead meteorologist. But I had the rare opportunity to tag along for the full shoot. We spent the day darting around downtown Portland, chasing light and framing shots as the videographer, meteorologist, creative director, and I worked together to bring the promo to life. It was quick, improvisational, and honestly a great reminder of how much creativity thrives under real-world constraints.
Seeing the finished promo air on TV—catching glimpses of myself mid-handshake—was surreal. That was my first on-screen appearance, and while it only lasted a few seconds, it made a lasting impression. I went on to participate in several other promos during my time at KOIN, but this one holds a special place for what it represented: stepping outside of my comfort zone and being part of something bigger than just the work behind the scenes.
