Operational Excellence (OpEx)
Project Synopsis

Following the success of the ComEx (Commercial Excellence) tool, the Operational Excellence (OpEx) team at CRH, headquartered in Germany, reached out to explore building a similar system for their internal assessment program. While initially exploring the idea of sharing the existing ComEx platform, it quickly became evident that the requirements and workflows of the OpEx team diverged enough to warrant the development of a separate, dedicated tool.

This project was not only a technical success—it also fostered international collaboration, combining the strengths of cross-functional teams in the U.K., Germany, and the U.S.

My Role and Responsibilities

As the creator of the original ComEx tool, I worked closely with the London-based ComEx team and the Germany-based OpEx team to evaluate requirements, identify shared opportunities, and design the best way to support both initiatives.

While I initially explored building a single tool supporting multiple assessments, it became clear that OpEx needed unique workflows and enhancements. Rather than over-complicate the architecture, I spun up a separate version for OpEx, applying lessons learned from ComEx while remaining flexible for new needs. This also allowed for faster turnaround times and smoother cross-team testing.

My involvement extended beyond development. I collaborated with the OpEx team to refine their questionnaire structure for digital delivery, designed promotional graphics for their rollout, and helped rework documentation to support adoption. In turn, the OpEx team supported ComEx with video editing and training content, fostering a two-way partnership.

Even after the divestiture of OBE, I helped align with OBE’s own Operational Excellence leader to explore leveraging the system on their side of the organization.

Skills Demonstrated

• Cross-Cultural Collaboration
Worked with globally distributed teams across Germany, the U.K., and the U.S. to align requirements, navigate timezone and language differences, and build mutual trust across departments.

• System Architecture & Product Forking
Evaluated architectural options and implemented a clean fork of the ComEx system to support different features, logic, and branding, ensuring both tools could evolve independently.

• UX & Questionnaire Structuring
Partnered with both teams to refine question delivery for better digital usability, reducing confusion and increasing adoption across varied business units.

• Internal Branding & Communication Design
Produced launch materials and promotional graphics, reinforcing OpEx’s unique identity while supporting the system’s rollout to a global user base.

• Scalability & Post-Divestiture Continuity
Designed systems to ensure long-term sustainability across both CRH and OBE infrastructures, keeping the tools functional and adaptable beyond company restructuring.
