KOIN Local 6 News
Web Manager 08/2012 - 09/2013

I joined KOIN Local 6 in Portland, Oregon, as their Web Manager to oversee their web presence during a significant ownership transition. KOIN, along with around 20 other news stations nationwide, was being acquired by a new owner, and they needed someone to manage the web migration and related tasks.

With over a decade of fragmented data in legacy systems, I collaborated with the new ownership to develop a comprehensive data management plan for migrating everything to WordPress. This involved backing up and testing data imports to ensure a smooth transition and coordinating the publication of all news stories on both the old and new platforms to avoid any loss of content.

In addition to overseeing the platform transition, I also took on graphic design responsibilities. I designed and built various ads for the station's campaigns, including IAB ads and full-page skin wraps for clients. Some of these ads featured Flash-based pencil drop-downs.

I established partnerships with multiple non-profits across the Portland Metro area to support their initiatives through strategic campaigns. By leveraging on-air talent, our website, promotional ads, and marketing emails, I was able to boost engagement by approximately 35%. I also designed, developed, and documented technical and business specifications for several platforms adopted by KOIN, including setting up a comprehensive document storage system to facilitate ongoing projects.

Part of my role included managing online promotional campaigns and contests. I collaborated with business, sales, and creative teams to handle these initiatives for local viewers. One notable contest was a bracket-style competition with 64 local breweries vying for the top spot, which required extensive promotional efforts both on-air and online. Other companies I managed contests for included Disney, Nike, the Oregon State Fair, McDonald's, Jack in the Box, Ringling Bros., and various local businesses.

Ensuring continuous FCC compliance was another critical responsibility. I analyzed and implemented policies required by the FCC, maintained contestant lists, and tracked winners and prizes to meet regulatory requirements.

I also managed the online presence for various station initiatives throughout the year. Whether the station was running or participating in these initiatives, I handled everything from designing banners and graphics to creating web pages. Highlights included managing the Meal to Remember holiday gift drive, local sports player highlights, and CBS promotional content for upcoming fall lineups.

My time at KOIN was a career highlight. Despite the brief duration due to the buyout, I accomplished a great deal and contributed to many important community initiatives.
